Event: It's Our City - Referendums
On 24th March at 7pm, join us for an event with It's Our City, exploring how they brought citizens together to change the way local democracy is organised.
It’s Our City is a community-led network of citizens in Sheffield thinking, talking and working together on issues of common concern to all.
When Sheffield voters learned that only a small minority of councillors were making most of the decisions, they decided it was time for change.
In 2019, a petition signed by over 26,000 people was submitted to the council -Sheffield voters decided that they wanted to shift from the Strong Leader model to a modern committee system and a more democratic way of working.
This event will provide an opportunity to:
- Learn more about the Sheffield story
- Discover how to organise a referendum locally
- Meet other people and share learning and experiences
- Consider the benefit of a referendum network to share resources, skills and experience
It’s Our City! is a community-led network of citizens in Sheffield thinking, talking and working together on issues of common concern to all. They seek to be an independent, positive and productive contributor to a vibrant local democracy, and for the well-being and resilience of Sheffields diverse communities. They ask for more from our elected representatives (Councillors and MPs), statutory authorities, and other managing and delivering services.
