Ward Alliances

Barnsley Council has led the way in reforming how councillors work in partnership with local citizens. All councillors now work with other citizens within a Ward Alliance to develop solutions that make more sense to local people. In addition, commissioning for services is focused on commissioning from local people and supporting local people.

Barnsley’s approach is a good example of a council working to develop neighbourhood democracy through reorganising local systems of power and decision-making.
